What was it about CrossFit that first appealed to you?
I knew very little about Crossfit before I joined, all that I knew was that Chris Templeman is a great coach and I wanted to be at the gym where he taught which meant leaving the gym I had been a member of for 11 years and following Chris as he opened Crossfit Clitheroe.
How has CrossFit changed your lifestyle?
Although it sounds very sad, Crossfit really has changed my lifestyle, as you get older, you look for something different, a change from the normal routine and Crossfit offered that, I now have a hobby that I really enjoy and one that has significantly changed the way that I look and feel for the better. As well as a hobby I participate in, I now also have a sport that enjoy watching, something I have not had before, spectating and supporting friends that are good at the sport is really enjoyable. My eldest son (age 7) also goes to Crossfit making it more than a hobby that I undertake on my own, as well as participating in the sport he also loves to attend competitions and support others, this has meant that me and him have had some great weekends away together. Hopefully one day I will be going to watch him compete!!!
Do you eat cleaner than you previously did? If so tell us why and whether is has helped.
When I first joined Crossfit I didn’t eat any differently but then along with a few other members I decided to give Eat Clean November a go and was surprised how eating mainly Paleo makes you feel much better. I now stick to a type of Paleo the majority of the time with the odd cheat day. Eating this way does make you feel better as well as helps to maintain or loose weight.
How many times a week do you do CrossFit?
Too many!! I Crossfit everyday and then also tend to do spinning, endurance or strength and power most days as well.
Has it helped you with your job in any way?
In the early days of Crossfit it hurt so much that I couldn’t even climb the many stairs in the buildings at work so can hardly say it helped!! It has however, given me something in common with some other members of the workforce that I wouldn’t necessarily have had anything in common with before. We have also done a work team building type class at Crossfit Clitheroe which was very successful.
What was your original goal when joining?
I didn’t really have a specific goal when I joined, I had my 2nd child the year before I joined so losing weight was obviously appealing but I really just wanted to do exercise differently, relieve the boredom of exercising and be a part of something new.
Now that you have achieved your goal would you like to take it further?
Since joining Crossfit I have lost quite a lot of weight without really trying, yes I exercise a lot but at no point have I made a conscious effort to loose weight. I now weigh the same as I did when I got married 10 years a go and before I had my two boys, which is something I am quite proud of. I do not feel any need to loose any more weight but I would certainly like to maintain the weight I am at now. My goals are now more focussed around making achievements within Crossfit, improving in the areas that I am not very good at (of which there are many!).
What do you like about the CrossFit community?
Since joining Crossfit, I have made some really great new friends, I am quite shy but it is easy to make friends when you have something in common with people. Since CC has open, the community side has gone from strength to strength, people are very supportive of each other at the gym and also in competitions, the encouragement you receive is great. We have also started to develop a social side of the gym with nights out as well as a liking for ‘road trips’, travelling to watch the CC athletes compete, I will never be good enough to compete but I like to think I make a pretty good supporter!
